Public lecture to explore state of men’s health in Leeds
The report, The State of Men’s Health in Leeds, was commissioned by Leeds City Council and undertaken by researchers in the Centre for Men’s Health at Leeds Beckett and provides the first complete picture of the breadth of issues affecting men’s health in the city.
The event, which takes place on Monday 13 June at 3pm at the Rose Bowl, will include contributions from the lead author of the report, Professor Alan White, Councillor Lisa Mulherin, Chair of the Leeds Health and Wellbeing Board and Dr Ian Cameron, Director of Public Health at Leeds City Council.
Speaking ahead of the lecture, Alan White, Professor of Men’s Health at Leeds Beckett, said: “We are incredibly excited to be able to launch our State of Men’s Health in Leeds report and highlight health and social issues facing men in our city. This event will be an opportunity to reveal what we have uncovered in the report and begin a conversation which looks at what we can all do about the issues men have in accessing provision and reducing their risk of developing physical and mental health issues.”
Leeds is the first city in the UK to explore the health and social issues of its male population. There are a significant proportion of boys and men who are failing to reach their potential in terms of their educational attainment, employment, stable safe relationships, fatherhood, and their physical and mental health. Across nearly all causes of death, men in Leeds are more likely than women to die at a younger age. There are many positive examples of where services are successfully reaching out to men, but there are also a significant proportion of those most in need that are effectively ‘unreached’ by current provision.
The event forms part of Leeds Beckett’s support of Men’s Health Week 2016 which this year is themed around stress.
