Leading orthopaedic surgeon presents research
Ernest Schilders, Professor of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, is one of the UK’s foremost experts in adductor problems in sports and works at the Fortius Clinic, FIFA Medical and Research Centre and leads The London Hip Arthroscopy Centre at the Wellington Hospital.
His inaugural lecture, entitled ‘Groin Pain in Sports: Applying Anatomy Research in Clinical Practice’ took place in the James Graham Building at Leeds Beckett’s Headingley Campus. You can watch his lecture in full here:
Professor Schilders said: “Groin injuries are known to be one of the most difficult areas to treat in sports medicine. Understanding of the athlete’s groin has been hampered by perplexing terminology and the use of incorrect anatomical concepts. My research has contributed significantly towards clearer understanding, diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.”
Professor Schilders has developed new surgical techniques to treat adductor problems in athletes, allowing them to make a faster and consistent return to sports and has treated players from the majority of Premiership and Championship football teams but also other European teams such as Barcelona FC and Juventus.
With a unique profile, the surgery he offers is minimally invasive surgery of the hip, but also in treatment of conditions such as sportsman’s hernia, adductor problems and osteitis pubis.
He has one of the largest hip arthroscopy practices in the country having performed approximately 2500 hip arthroscopies.
Professor Schilders obtained his medical degree at the University of Antwerp in Belgium and has specialised as an orthopaedic surgeon in Antwerp and the United States. He has published several key papers and book chapters on adductor problems in sports, sports hernia and femoro acetabular impingement, which are his main research topics.
