Journalism students scoop national prize
Hannah Clarke and Lottie Kilraine, who both study on Leeds Business School’s MSc Journalism course, have been recognised by the Print Futures Awards, with each receiving a £1,500 grant to put towards taking the next step in their careers.
Hannah and Lottie were part of a select group chosen ahead of hundreds of applicants, impressing judges with their ambition and ideas for the future.
They plan to use the grants to gain a diploma from the National Council for the Training of Journalists, which will enable them to compete for jobs at some of the country’s top publications.
Hannah said: “I was absolutely shocked when I found out I’d won, to be chosen ahead of people across the country is a huge honour.
“Going forward, I want to continue to build my portfolio of work, which I will be able to do alongside completing the diploma.”
The grant will allow both students to focus more closely on their careers, after they balanced their studies at Leeds Beckett with volunteering and part-time work.
Lottie said: “These awards are really important and helpful for students like myself.
“I worked throughout my undergrad and had two jobs during my postgrad, but this grant will mean that I can start studying my NCTJ Diploma as soon as I graduate. It will also give me the opportunity to work full time towards my future career while I study which is really exciting.”
Over a dozen students from the university have won Print Futures Awards in the past five years, making Leeds Beckett the institution with the most wins in that time.
Sean Dodson, Course Director at Leeds Business School, said: “These awards enable talented students, like Hannah and Lottie, to advance their careers without being overburdened financially.
“That we have had a number of award winners in recent years is testament to the enduring determination, commitment and high-quality work of our journalism students.”
