Student Art and Design show to get underway
A week-long exhibition, which will showcase the innovative work of 23 Art and Design Masters students from Leeds Beckett University, is set to get underway.
The show, which will run from 1-7 September 2018, will display a diverse mix of art and design, including photography, fashion design, sound, sculpture, graphic design and collage.
Speaking about the show, Dr Alan Dunn, a senior lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, said:
“This year’s show is incredibly diverse and contains a huge variety of traditional and contemporary approaches.
“The students have been working hard throughout the year to develop these individual projects and I am really proud of the standard they have produced. There are some really interesting themes within the works, including cartography, 1970s design, statelessness, Sikh festivals and the memories of twins.
“Throughout the course, our students have been able to benefit from the many partnerships that we’ve developed across the city and you can really see this in their work. This year’s students have had the chance to work with the likes of the Leeds Art Gallery, the Henry Moore Institute and East Street Arts, and were able to present their works on the media wall at Bruntwood’s brand new Platform Building.“
As part of the exhibition, a short film created by Christine Hinchliffe, a part-time student on the MA Art and Design course, will be shown on the Big Screen in Millennium Square. The four-minute-long film entitled ‘Shining Gum’ will be screened daily at 12 noon from 28 August - 10 September.
The film captures the final days of a rare gum eucalyptus tree before it is cut down and makes use of specialised contact microphones to enhance the impact of the imagery.
“I am very excited and amazed that my small film is a cause of such interest,” said Christine.
“The MA Art and Design course has allowed me to grow and evolve as a person and as an artist, and having my work displayed on such a stage is testament to that.
“Throughout the course I’ve been involved in a variety of exciting projects with my fellow students, including the Ukraine Centre Trace Exhibition which was a brilliant experience. Getting to work with one of the world’s leading sound artists Chris Watson, was also a particular highlight.”
The exhibition will take place in Studio B206, Broadcasting Place and will be open every day from 11:00-16:00.
