This Leeds girl can: workshop to inspire women in sport comes to Leeds
With support from Dr Leanne Norman, Senior Research Fellow at Leeds Beckett, Women in Sport - an organisation which champions the right of every woman and girl in the UK to take part in, and benefit from, sport - have created a workshop using insight and research to empower and equip even more people to transform sport for the benefit of every woman and girl in the UK.
Women in Sport’s Insight On Tour is travelling the country: taking in Nottingham, Devon and Suffolk in addition to Leeds; the Leeds event takes place in the Acre Room of the James Graham building at Leeds Beckett’s Headingley Campus from 1pm to 4pm.
Dr Norman explained: “Following a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio for Team GB's female athletes, now is a crucial time to capitalise on this by ensuring organisations, groups, providers and governing bodies prioritise women's increasing participation in sport and that these efforts are insight-led.
“Given the expertise of our School of Sport in gender equality in sport and coaching, the partnership between Leeds Beckett, led by myself, and Women in Sport, is a fantastic opportunity to showcase not only the research being carried out in this area but also how it is impacting 'on the ground' issues.”
Women in Sport’s Senior Partnerships Manager, Jenni Platt, believes now is an opportune moment for the sports sector to re-assess its offering to women and girls. She added: “Rio 2016 has gripped the whole of the UK with demonstrations of inspiring skill and sporting excellence, alongside moments of grit and determination. Team GB’s performance, across so many disciplines, has inspired millions.
“A real highlight has been the exposure of women’s sport to the masses. We want to capitalise on this, by supporting partners, sports providers, individuals and groups to ensure their plans to capitalise are insight-led. We know, now more than ever, women and girls across the UK want to get active and enjoy the benefits of sport. These range of events are attune to that opportunity and provide unique expertise to ensure a sustainable and long-term legacy.”
The workshops will focus on ‘leveraging influencers and role models for the benefit of women and girls in sport’. Discussions will centre on Women in Sport’s 2015 ‘What Sways Women to Play Sport?’ research and will explore how this can be used to change sporting behaviours locally. The workshops will be a mixture of round table discussions, case studies and presentations from Women in Sport, with time for attendees to network.
The workshops are aimed at members of the Women in Sport network and beyond: including national governing bodies, coaches and leaders within sport, sporting organisations, groups, providers and charities with an interest in understanding the latest issues impacting women's participation in sport.
