MP and Judge join Leeds Law School as Visiting Fellows
Karl Turner is the Member of Parliament (Labour) for East Hull and has been an MP since 2010. He is both a barrister and solicitor and, as an MP, has served as shadow Solicitor General and shadow Attorney General. Karl is an advocate of legal aid and is keen to ensure that the criminal justice system is fair and open to all, regardless of wealth. He is a member of Wilberforce Chambers in Hull.
On his appointment, Karl said: “I am honoured to have been invited to be a visiting fellow at Leeds Law School. The Law School has a proud tradition of training truly excellent lawyers and it is my privilege to join them. Recent political events have placed the law in sharp focus and I feel that my experience as Shadow Attorney General will complement the fantastic teaching provided by Leeds Law School staff.”
Judge John Harrow qualified as a solicitor in Leeds in 1969 and worked in Wakefield for more than 20 years. In 1986 he embarked on a successful judicial career when he was appointed a part-time Chairman of the Appeals Service, followed by his appointment to Assistant Recorder in 1990, Recorder in 1995 and District Chairman of the Appeals Service in 1996. John was appointed a Circuit Judge in 2003 and served for 13 years on the South-Western Circuit. He retired from the bench in January 2016 and has recently joined the Parole Board.
John commented: “I have been lucky in my achievements from a very ordinary background with no academic qualifications. I am so pleased to have this opportunity to help and encourage young people to study and enjoy law and hopefully to enter a wonderful profession."
Deveral Capps, Dean of Leeds Law School, said “I am delighted that both John and Karl have accepted our invitation to become Visiting Fellows. This will help to cement the already strong links between them and Leeds Law School and ensure that our students and staff will benefit from their respective expertise and knowledge.”
