Successful Business Summer School sees more delegates coming to Leeds
The group from the Taizhou University arrived in June for the three-month summer school, which aimed to help them get fundamental level knowledge and grounding in business which will help inform their teaching back home.
As part of the programme, they have studied business context, business management, marketing, PR and finance for non-finance managers.
They have also attended a number of industry visits including one to the Hilton Double Tree and have been taken on cultural trips to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, York, Haworth and the Lake District.
Steven Lu, one of the delegates from Taizhou University, said: “I feel so happy to be here because I have gained a comprehensive study about business English. Everything is fantastic here.”
Two other delegates, Wu Fengzhen and Zhou Xiaoling added: “The insightful teachers have showed us their academic knowledge and teaching skills, which are fantastic and totally new to us.”
Leeds Beckett has also played host to students from Bangladesh in a similar scheme. A delegation of MBA and International Business students from the University of Dhaka visited for two weeks in July. The guests were all mature students in high-level positions in the banking, finance and real estate sectors and attended to compare business and economic policy in the UK and Bangladesh.
As part of their learning experience, delegates received masterclass sessions on a range of topics from the implications on international business operations after Brexit, to global manufacturing and supply chain management, to contemporary issues in bilateral trade and investment relations between the UK and Bangladesh.
These topics were supplemented with industry visits to AQL and AW Hainsworth. Delegates also explored some of the attractions in Yorkshire including the Royal Armouries, Harewood House and York.
Leeds Beckett’s Economics and Trans-National Education Course Director, Julie Barnaby who organised the Summer School, said: “Delivering the Summer School has been massively rewarding and enjoyable. The group from Taizhou have been brilliant to work with and have responded with enthusiasm to every experience we have provided for them, whether that be in the classroom or as part of the cultural or industry visits.
“As we reach the end of the Summer School genuine friendships have been forged and the feedback from the group about their experience is extremely positive. So much so, we are already talking about further opportunities for collaboration and potentially another Summer School for undergraduate students from Taizhou next year.”
Speaking about the Summer School, Freeman Wu, the leader of the Taizhou University delegation, said: “This Summer School is the first step in the cooperation between our two universities, and it turns out to be very fruitful. I feel so grateful for all the staff here in Leeds Beckett and I look forward to further cooperation in the near future. Leeds is a wonderful city and next year, 20 students from our university will come to Leeds Beckett for a one-month Business Summer School, some of them plan to study here for their Masters Degree, and this will bring more opportunities for both universities.”
