Leeds Beckett LLB (Hons) Law degree launched in Mauritius
The undergraduate LLB (Hons) franchised degree programme will begin in September 2017, offering students a unique exchange programme, allowing students from Mauritius to study in Leeds and students from Leeds to study in Mauritius.
The course was officially launched by Hon Etienne Sinatambou, Minister of Social Security, Reform Institutions and Environment, and Sustainable Development, and Member of the Mauritian Bar, on Friday 25 August at the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, Port Louis. It was attended by Deveral Capps, Dean of Leeds Law School, Melissa Askew, the Head of Law at Leeds Law School, and Steve Wood, Principal Lecturer for International Development, as well as representatives of Rushmore Business School. Also in attendance were a number of senior Mauritian lawyers and members of the judiciary.
Speaking about the new programme, Deveral said: “We are delighted to launch this programme with our long-standing and established partner, Rushmore. This degree blends English Law with Mauritian Law and is also a qualifying law degree: it will be attractive to all who want to practise law in Mauritius. The exchange programme also offers our own students a unique opportunity to engage with Mauritian culture as well as developing an understanding of the two distinct jurisdictions.”
Dr Nittin Essoo, Director of Rushmore Business School, said: “This course will offer local students an opportunity to enrol on a British degree with an international and local touch at a competitive rate. It will be another step further in Rushmore’s mission of making quality education more accessible.”
Jeevesh Augnoo, who will be coordinating the course, added: “The course delivery will be enhanced through a range of additional student activities including mooting and debating training, court visits and a series of guest lectures.”
Steve Wood said: “This is the first franchise of the LLB programme at Leeds Law School and it was only possible because of hard-working staff at Leeds Beckett and in Mauritius. I look forward to supporting this programme and seeing students from Mauritius at the Law School in Leeds and students from Leeds being able to study part of their degree in Mauritius.”
This new programme marks another milestone in the collaboration between Leeds Beckett University and Rushmore Business School in their longstanding academic partnership, offering a complete and coherent experience to students.
