Community event to look at how food and ethnicity can affect your health
They will be hosting an event with community partners at Leeds West Indian Centre in Chapeltown on Wednesday 8 November, as part of the annual Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science.
The team, from the School of Health, will be talking to people about their FOODEY (Food, Diabetes and Ethnicity) study. Using focus groups and interviews, the academics sought people’s views on the role of food, place and health amongst ethnically and socially diverse groups.
Along with partner organisations, the event will include stalls, activities, information and health checks at the community centre. People can come along and hear about the study and other health issues. It will be of particular interest to FOODEY participants, individuals and families from local communities, as well as third sector, health and social care organisations and professionals. A buffet of Caribbean-inspired food will be provided.
Dr Maria Maynard, who led the study, said: “The festival is a free, family-friendly event showcasing community-participation and focusing on food, place and health. It’s a great chance for people to hear about our study and find out how they can lead a healthier lifestyle, particularly looking at what they eat.”
Now in its fifteenth year, the ESRC Festival of Social Science is a week-long celebration of the social sciences with over 300 free topical events taking place across the UK. For more information visit festivalofsocialscience.com
The FOODEY fair is on Wednesday 8 November from 3pm at the Leeds West Indian Centre, 10 Laycock Place in Chapeltown.
