Leeds Beckett University students to compete in international tennis tournament
The competition, organised by Tennis Australia, will take place in the Sichuan International Tennis Centre in Chengdu, China from Monday 1 July until Sunday 7 July.
The tournament will see male and female teams compete in a round-robin competition across singles, doubles and mixed doubles events, with seven students from Leeds Beckett University set to compete, including first team captains Jordan Reed-Thomas and Jennifer Gadsby.
Last year, Loughborough University were crowned inaugural champions of the Belt and Road Chengdu-Australian Open University Tennis Championship and Leeds Beckett University are keen to keep the trophy within the UK and bring it home to Leeds.
Head Coach Steve McLoughlin said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for Leeds Beckett University to compete against seven of the best teams from across the globe.”
“We’re really excited for the event after another solid domestic season in our BUCS competitions, which saw both our men’s and women’s first teams reach the BUCS Championship quarter finals.
“The winners of the championship will get an all-inclusive VIP holiday to go to the Australian Open in January, so the team are more determined than ever to go out there and win.”
Leeds Beckett University will compete against Sichuan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University from China, The University of Queensland in Australia, Keio University in Japan, Myongji University in Korea, The National University of Singapore and The Academic College at Wingate in Israel.
