Leeds Beckett duo qualifies for women’s 800m final
Leeds Beckett student Keely Hodgkinson finished first in her 800m semi-final
19-year-old Keely won her 800m semi-final with an incredible late push to finish the race in 01:59:12.
BA (Hons) Human Geography 2014 graduate Alex Bell finished third in her semi-final but had the strongest time of all the runners to finish outside of the top two, with a blistering 01:58:83 time.
Both Alex and Keely are members of the Leeds Beckett University Talent Hub, a scheme which provides a high-quality performance development environment for elite athletes and offers a dual-career pathway through learning and education.
Andrew Henderson, Head Coach of Athletics at Leeds Beckett University, is heavily involved with the Talent Hub and, alongside Talent Hub Performance Coach Helen Clitheroe, works closely with both Hodgkinson and Bell, and is the latter’s head coach.
Henderson said: “We are incredibly proud that both Alex and Keely have made the 800m final,
“Both have worked really hard with the Talent Hub this year and now have an amazing opportunity to compete in an Olympic final,
“Their success highlights the type of environment we aspire to create at the Talent Hub, which is a place for elite athletes to push each other, excel and receive the best support and resources that the university has to offer.
“We set ourselves very realistic KPIs for the Talent Hub, given this is officially our first year in operation, and we have exceeded all of those this year.”
Alex and Keely’s qualification capped off an incredible day for Leeds Beckett’s athletes, after the university’s triathlon trio won gold in the first ever Olympic triathlon mixed relay.
