2022 Leeds Sports Awards finalists announced
Dean of the Carnegie School of Sport Peter Mackreth and Director of Sport & Active Lifestyles Sally Griffiths (centre) with students Jenson Connell, Britt Coleman, Jack Broadbent and Jess Woolston at the Leeds Sports Awards launch
Alumna Georgia Taylor-Brown MBE and Talent Hub athlete Keeley Hodgkinson headline a list of sports stars from Leeds Beckett University to be nominated for this year’s awards. Both Georgia and Keeley have been nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year award, alongside Triathlon Leeds’ Jess Learmonth MBE.
Triathlon Leeds, alongside Leeds Beckett, helped train the Team GB Mixed Relay Triathlon in the build-up to last year’s Tokyo Games. Triathlon Leeds is a partnership between Leeds Beckett University, the University of Leeds, Leeds City Council and British Triathlon.
The Team GB triathlon team featured Georgia and Jess as well as Honorary Graduate Jonny Brownlee MBE and alumnus Alex Yee. The team has been nominated in the Club/Team Performance (18+) award category, after winning gold in the first ever Mixed Relay Triathlon Olympic event.
Keely’s nomination in the Sportswoman category comes after a remarkable debut senior season on the athletics circuit, which culminated in winning an Olympic silver medal in the women's 800m and breaking Dame Kelly Holmes’ long-standing British record.
Keely competed alongside fellow Talent Hub star Alex Bell in the 800m final. Alex’s coach and Leeds Beckett University Head of Athletics Andrew Henderson has been nominated in the Coach Performance award category through his work with Alex and the Leeds Beckett University Talent Hub.
The Talent Hub played a significant role in the support of four Olympians, including Keely and Alex as well as alumnus Tom Bosworth and steeplechase athlete Lizzie Bird.
Another finalist to shine at Tokyo 2020 was Honorary Graduate and alumna Kadeena Cox OBE. Kadeena has been nominated in the Sportswoman: Disability award category after capturing two Paralympic gold medals and receiving an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List.
Two Leeds Beckett University Athletic Union teams have been nominated in the Student Sport: Performance category. The university’s tennis club and men’s football club have both received nominations after successful seasons in the British University and Colleges Sport championships.
The Leeds Sports Awards will take place on Thursday 12 May at New Dock Hall, Leeds. Leeds Beckett University is one of three headline sponsors for the Awards, alongside Channel Four and the Yorkshire Evening Post.
The full finalists list is available to view on the Leeds Sports Awards website.
