Alumna Lucy Bronze and Lionesses roar into Euro’s semi-finals
BSc (Hons) Sports Studies, 2013, graduate Lucy Bronze and England secured a place in the Women’s European Championship semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Spain.
Lucy will be looking to add more silverware to her trophy cabinet after winning the FA Women’s League Cup with Manchester City last season.
Lucy and her teammates will compete against the winner of Sweden and Belgium in the semi-final on Tuesday 26 July at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, with a place in the final at Wembley up for grabs.
Talent Hub duo reach semi-finals of IAAF World Athletics Championships
Leeds Beckett University Talent Hub’s 800m duo Keely Hodgkinson and Alex Bell have qualified for the semi-finals of the IAAF World Athletics Championships.
The event has seen six athletes from the university’s Talent Hub compete.
Joe Ferguson placed seventh in his semi-final in the Men’s 200m, while 3000m steeplechase athlete Lizzie Bird and 5000m runner Amy-Eloise Markovc bowed out during the heats in Oregon.
800m runner Max Burgin was forced to withdraw from the competition before his opening heat due to an agonising calf injury.
Leeds Beckett University Talent Hub Manager Dr Andi Drake said: “We are extremely proud to have six athletes compete at this year’s World Athletics Championships in Oregon.
“It has been an incredible experience so far for all of our athletes, and we wish both Keely and Alex the best of luck ahead of tonight’s semi-finals.”
Although Alex and Keely will be focused on the World Championships they, alongside their fellow Talent Hub athletes, face a short turnaround for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games are due to start on Thursday 28 July and will include 15 sports stars from Leeds Beckett University, including athletes from the Talent Hub, BUCS Super Rugby programme and former LBU graduates.
Talent Hub star to compete in World Athletics Under 20 Championships
Leeds Beckett University Talent Hub athlete Ethan Hussey has been selected to complete for Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the World Athletics Under 20 Championships, set to take place in Cali, Columbia from Monday 1 August.
Ethan, who studies BA (Hons) Economics and Finance in the Leeds Business School, will compete in the 800m and 1500m events in Columbia.
Ethan’s coach, Leeds Beckett University Head of Athletics, Andrew Henderson said: “Ethan has an amazing opportunity to compete in his first World Championships,
“We are confident that Ethan can have a successful Championships and are looking forward to watching him compete against the best athletes the world has to offer in his age group.”
