Leeds Beckett University celebrates its nursing community on International Nurses Day
The university’s School of Health offers a number of courses in nursing including Adult Nursing and Mental Health Nursing. As part of their course, students take part in several placements to help them experience and understand the realities that nursing involves, preparing them for their future workplace.
Kelly Thackwray is in her second year of an Adult Nursing degree. It was personal reasons that led her to consider a career in nursing:

Rachel Attricki is in her final year of her Adult Nursing degree. She is an international student from Qatar and had a complete change of mind for her career:
“I know it sounds cliché but that has always been my dream to be a nurse. I’ve tried other ways to satisfy that urge to take care of people and I was never really satisfied so I just had to have a whole 360 change of career because I worked in an embassy in Qatar. The urge to serve people and also to make people feel good, because that’s sometimes the only thing we can do, trying to help people more in their times of need and their low moments. That’s my need for nursing.”
Lissa Pierre, who has come to Leeds from the Turks and Caicos, began studying Adult Nursing in January this year:

Kathryn Waldegrave is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing:
“I think as a nursing team here, we’re in such a fortunate position. No two days are the same. The cliché is that every day is a school day, but it really is because students teach us so much. It’s not just about what we give – from my point of view it’s a two-way street. Students don’t come to us as empty vessels, they come with knowledge, skills, life experiences and it’s for us to draw those out and be able to use them to support their professional development.”
She says that the future is in social care nursing:Senior Lecturer Kathryn Waldegrave Kathryn talks about the future of nursing
Kelly is now thinking about where her future lies after she finishes her studies:
“This is what I really like about nursing is that there are so many doors that are open to you. I think I will probably go down the oncology route or hospice because of my background, but I also like the thought of prison nursing – it’s really random but it’s stuck in my head for some reason, so yes it’s time to explore.”
Rachel finishes her course this year and is now thinking about her future:

Lissa is just at the start of her degree but is already thinking ahead:
“I’m looking forward to gaining more experience and knowledge in order for me to thrive in this career. My end goal is to be a nurse practitioner, so I’m looking forward to building more experience in order to achieve that goal.”
