What you need to know about SEAtS
How does it work?
At the start of each timetabled class, lecturers use SEAtS to generate and share a time-limited code that students can use to check-in. Students will then enter this on the SEAtS mobile app, which they’ll be asked to download as part of their induction.
Staff can also update attendance directly in the system for any students unable to register attendance using their phone.
Which students will use SEAtS?
Since September 2023, most first year undergraduate (level 4) students have been required to check-in to timetabled classes using the SEAtS system.
Following a successful launch, the system will now be rolled out to most second year undergraduate (level 5) and Leeds Law School postgraduate taught (level 7) students in January.
How will staff learn to use the system?
Whilst simple to use, you will need to attend a short training session if you are using the system for the first time in January. Invitations to training will be sent to colleagues soon.
What are the benefits of the system?
It will deliver a more consistent approach to attendance management: good attendance has been shown to contribute to better academic outcomes.
SEAts will make life simpler and easier for colleagues and students, with significantly less administrative overhead for teaching staff and course administration teams.
It will provide an early-warning system for under-performing and at-risk students, alerting staff to potential behaviour changes and providing more opportunities for early intervention and support.
The system will also enable the University to meet and manage obligations in relation to visas, modern apprenticeships, clinics, and other professional accreditations.
Where can I find out more?
There is detailed support available for staff, including FAQs, troubleshooting tips and system instructions. If you have any other questions, please contact your Academic Services Manager.
We’ll continue to provide guidance and updates on the new system.
