Alex Bell and Keely Hodgkinson among athletes with Leeds Beckett connections going for gold in Rome
Six of the elite athletes train with the Leeds Talent Hub - a partnership between England Athletics, Leeds Beckett University, London Marathon and the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS).
Alex Bell (Coach: Andrew Henderson, Club: Leeds) and Keely Hodgkinson (Trevor Painter, Leigh) will go head-to-head in the women's 800m in a showdown they hope to repeat for the second successive Olympic final in Paris later this summer.
Lizzie Bird (Pat McCurry, Shaftesbury Barnet) enters the 3000m Steeple Chase, while Calli Hauger-Thackery (Hallamshire) competes in the half-marathon ahead of her tilt at the full marathon in the Olympics this summer.
Calli was on Leeds Beckett's Headingley Campus on Friday 31 May for blood screening and a session in the state-of-the-art environmental chambers at Leeds Beckett. One of our sports scientists breaks down what this is and why it helps athletes prepare for peak performance.
In the field, Jacob Fincham-Dukes (Matt Barton, Leeds) enters his second European Championships as Great Britain's only entrant in the long jump, while Olympian Scott Lincoln (Paul Wilson, City of York) aims to build on last month's personal best of 21.31.
Alongside the Talent Hub athletes, Leeds Beckett graduate Callum Wilkinson (Robert Heffernan, Enfield & Haringey) will compete in the 20km race walk.
Talent Hub Manager and Olympic Games Athletics Coach, Andrew Drake, said: "The Talent Hub exists to put promising athletes on the path to compete and medal at major championships, so it is encouraging to see such a strong cohort of athletes connected to the hub heading out to Rome.
"Reaching those standards is the result of the enormous personal dedication and talent of the athletes, supported by the world-class coaches, nutritionists, psychologists and other sports scientists in the Talent Hub and the wider university."
