Rob Burrow CBE: statement from Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Slee
"Everyone at Leeds Beckett is saddened by the passing of Rob Burrow.
"Our thoughts are with Lindsey and their family, and Rob's many friends.
"Rob will be remembered as one of the greats by the rugby league community. And he will be remembered by millions for his tireless work as a Motor Neurone Disease (MND) campaigner. His strength and spirit will continue to be an inspiration to all of us, and the incredible fundraising work he led with Kevin Sinfield will offer hope for others living with MND.
"Honorary Doctorates at Leeds Beckett are conferred on individuals whose achievements reflect the values of the university or on individuals who have made a positive impact on Leeds or on the region. We were delighted to award Rob his Honorary Doctorate of Sport Science in 2021 for his outstanding contribution to rugby league, the city of Leeds and his charity work.
"Through our partnership with Leeds Rhinos, staff and students from our Carnegie School of Sport had the privilege to work side by side with Rob, during both his illustrious playing career and in his time as Head Academy Coach. As a self-proclaimed underdog within a sport of giants, Rob's determination, resilience and team ethic remains an inspiration for those who worked with him.
Colleagues have also supported Rob and Kevin's monumental fundraising efforts, including designing a specially adapted wheelchair for Rob, allowing both Kevin and Rob to take part in the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon in 2023.
"We will continue to offer our support to future challenges, and will consider how we can further mark and celebrate Rob's legacy, with friends and city partners. For now, in Rob's own, inspiring words from the striking mural on our city campus 'In a world full of adversity, we must dare to dream'."
