Media executive David Lowen to be awarded honorary doctorate by Leeds Beckett University
From developing the award-winning Calendar news programme over 40 years ago, David has been active in the Leeds city region as founder of the Leeds Media Initiative, Founder Director of the Yorkshire Screen Commission, now Screen Yorkshire, and Chair of the Royal Television Society branch in Leeds.
In 2014, David was appointed Chair of the Board of Governors of Leeds Beckett University where he played a pivotal role in stewarding the university through a challenging era for the sector. A champion of higher education, he also served as Chair of the Council of UCAS and Deputy Chair of Committee of University Chairs.
Under his leadership, the university invested heavily in its infrastructure and facilities, including cutting-edge new homes for the Leeds School of Arts and Carnegie School of Sport. It also jumped 40 places - the biggest increase of any institution - in the 2023 Complete University Guide rankings.
On receiving the award, David Lowen said: "I'm honoured that Leeds Beckett is bestowing this prestigious and personal award. It's a tough job running a university these days and it was brilliant to work alongside such a capable and enthusiastic team from professors to cleaners, students to governors. Leeds Beckett and its students deserve their success and I hope the university continues to fulfil its vital educational function."
Leeds Beckett University Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Slee said: "David has skilfully led the university through financial hardships and the devastating effects of a global pandemic. Thanks to his leadership and insight, the institution is in a strong position to take on the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead."
David Lowen will receive his honorary doctorate during Leeds Beckett’s graduation week in July, where over 7,500 students and nearly 29,000 guests will attend ceremonies. Over 11,000 students will graduate from the university this summer.
