James Donaldson to Leave Leeds Rhinos for Quantity Surveying Career
James is leaving the club after six years to transition into a new career as a quantity surveyor.
Donaldson joined Leeds Rhinos in 2019 on a trial basis after leaving Hull Kingston Rovers at the end of the 2018 season.
Beyond his achievements on the field, Leeds Rhinos played a pivotal role in supporting his academic ambitions. While playing for the club, he pursued a degree in quantity surveying at Leeds Beckett University, balancing his studies with the demands of professional sport.
Announcing his career-change through Leeds Rhinos, James said: "This was not an easy decision, but Leeds Rhinos will always hold a special place in my heart. The club has played a transformative role in my life, both on and off the field.
"I'm proud of what I have achieved, and much of that is due to the effort I have put in. When I first joined Leeds, I discovered their strong connection with Leeds Beckett University. I realised the importance of planning for life after rugby and decided to pursue a full-time degree in Quantity Surveying while still playing, to complete it as quickly as possible, and it's an achievement I'm incredibly proud of."
Leeds Beckett has a robust support system in place for student-athletes, helping them balance the demands of both academic and athletic commitments. This includes flexible scheduling, tailored academic advising for athletes, and access to sports psychologists who assist in managing stress and maintaining focus.
The university's partnership with Leeds Rhinos includes more than academics and sport, encompassing collaborative research initiatives, community engagement projects, and opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in sports management, physiotherapy, and coaching. This multifaceted partnership benefits both students and the wider community.
Mark Butterill, head coach of the Rugby League programme at Leeds Beckett University, said: "James' journey is a testament to the resilience and dedication we strive to instill in our players, both on and off the field. His ability to balance the rigours of professional rugby with academic excellence is truly inspiring.
"The university consistently supports athletes across all levels, from those just starting out to those already at a professional level like James. We pride ourselves on creating a balanced environment where students can pursue both their education and their sporting aspirations without having to choose between the two.
"We are proud of his achievements and the path he is now forging in quantity surveying. James has shown that with the right support and determination, it is possible to excel in multiple arenas. We wish him all the best in this next chapter of his life."
Over the years, Donaldson has become a respected figure at Leeds, making 112 appearances and contributing significantly to the team's successes, including the 2020 Challenge Cup victory and the 2022 Grand Final at Old Trafford.
Since graduating, James has been working one day a week with Rider Levett Bucknall in Leeds as an assistant cost manager, a role he secured through connections made during his degree and time at the Rhinos.
