Leeds Beckett Professor Receives Prestigious International Award
Professor Andrew Sparkes, from the Carnegie School of Sport, has been given the first Distinguished Scholar Award by the QRSE.
This award is presented to individuals who have made an 'outstanding and lasting' impact on qualitative research within the fields of sport, exercise, and physical activity.
Professor Sparkes, who joined the university in 2013, has long been a leading voice in qualitative research, contributing extensively to the understanding of human experiences in sport and exercise. His work, known for its depth and innovation, has influenced both academic discourse and practical applications in these fields.
His work, described as "nomadic" in nature, bridges various disciplines, leading to a rich and diverse academic output that has made a significant difference within his field. His research also explores how people experience different forms of embodiment over time, focusing on the complex dynamics of physical culture.
Professor Sparkes is known for his use of qualitative research methods such as life history, ethnography, autoethnography, and narrative approaches. He said: "To be given this award by one's peers from around the world, all of whom are experts themselves in various forms of qualitative research, is indeed an honour to be accepted with gratitude, grace, and humility.
"The recognition reflects the collaborative nature of academic research and highlights the importance of joint effort in advancing knowledge and understanding."
This award not only celebrates Professor Sparkes' individual achievements but also emphasises the significance of qualitative research in exploring the complex dimensions of sport and exercise, offering new insights into how these activities shape human lives.
