Leeds Beckett student leads community architecture project in Pakistan
Amir is completing a master's in architecture
Amir Saghir, who is currently completing a master's in architecture (MArch), and driven by a commitment to giving back, initiated this development to create a communal space for spiritual and social gatherings.
The project, a blend of modern and traditional Islamic architecture, will give students the opportunity to engage in Islamic and secular studies. It also features multipurpose spaces for adult education classes and youth mentorship programmes.
Amir said: “In the UK, we often take access to free healthcare and schooling for granted but these fundamental services are limited in rural Pakistan. By constructing a mosque and madrasa, I hope to create a community hub that offers essential services and educational opportunities.”
Beyond aesthetics, the design prioritises sustainability, with solar panels, self-sufficient water supply, and a commitment to using locally sourced materials.
Keith Andrews, Senior Lecturer at Leeds Beckett’s Leeds School of Arts, said: “Amir’s work in Pakistan is exemplary and is a prime example of students from the School of Architecture utilising what they’ve learned to make a real difference across communities globally.”
The mosque and madrasa, currently under construction has received local support, with villagers actively participating in construction and contributing to its development.
