Leeds Beckett University’s Health and Performance Hub joins forces with British Triathlon
Leeds Beckett has partnered with British Triathlon
The partnership offers a 10% discount for all Sport Science Services, bringing together academic expertise and world class facilities which has helped Leeds become synonymous with British triathlon's golden age.
With an established track record in helping Olympians, Ironman competitors, and local triathletes, the university supports athletes of all levels to reach their peak potential.
Through this partnership, British Triathlon members can now access the discount on the Health and Performance Hub's website and through the British Triathlon Rewardzone platform. This includes access to a range of elite sport science services, including physiological profiling to optimise training prescription, heat acclimation for high-temperature competitions, as well as nutrition services to fuel performance while minimising gut issues on race day.
What the hub offers
The hub also offers bespoke services for triathletes, such as the triathlon physiological profile (cycling and running). During a physiological profile several physiological abilities relevant to training and endurance performance are assessed. This allows triathletes to track progression over time, guide training prescription and planning, and development of pacing strategies. One of the standout tools the hub uses is DXA (DEXA).
DXA (DEXA) scans provide detailed and precise measurements of body fat, lean mass, and bone density. This technology is invaluable for tracking long-term changes in body composition. Whether it's monitoring recovery, assessing energy balance, or evaluating the impact of nutritional interventions, DXA (DEXA) offers unparalleled insight.
Additionally, the hub provides athlete pre-participation (cardiac) screening. This is preventative cardiac screening, including medical examination, resting ECG and assessment of cardiovascular disease risk factors. This assessment is essential for elite competition, but it is strongly recommended for any athlete. The hub offers a streamlined service essential to meeting all international event requirements.
Olympic champion Johnny Brownlee has already credited the hub’s heat acclimation training as a ‘game changer’.
He said: “I used the facilities at Leeds Beckett during my preparation for the triathlon event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the Abu Dhabi Grand Final in 2022. I specifically used the hot bath and the heat chamber to give me the best chance to win medals”.
“The world-class facilities and staff dedication, specifically Dr Dan Snape, were crucial in helping me win an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo. I cannot thank the university and staff enough."
A partnership built for champions
The relationship between Leeds Beckett and British Triathlon has grown steadily over the years. From helping British Olympians prepare for the challenging heat of the Tokyo and Paris Olympics to supporting regional triathletes with biomechanical analysis and cardiac screening, the hub's impact is felt across various levels of the sport. This new discount scheme expands the hub’s accessibility to all British Triathlon members, marking a new era of high-performance support.
Professor John O’Hara, Director of the Centre for Human Performance at Leeds Beckett, said: “Our partnership with British Triathlon has grown over the years and we are excited to expand our support. Now, we're eager to bring our expert sport science services to the entire membership through the Rewardzone. It’s a fantastic opportunity for athletes at all levels to elevate their performance and unlock their potential.”
Local and regional impact
In addition to its partnership with British Triathlon, Leeds Beckett’s Health and Performance Hub recently hosted the Triathlon England Yorkshire & Humber Annual General Meeting. This gathering showcased the hub’s ongoing commitment to fostering local triathlon talent. Topics like the role of heat acclimation and advanced carbohydrate fueling strategies highlighted the importance of cutting-edge sport science support for the region's athletes.
Aligning with the priorities of the Triathlon Leeds Board, the hub continues to strengthen resources for local and regional athletes, focusing on performance, resilience, and long-term athlete development.
