Leeds Beckett University congratulates Keely Hodgkinson on BBC sports personality success
The Olympic 800m champion won the public vote this evening, topping a shortlist which featured two other former Leeds Beckett Students, Dame Sarah Storey and Alex Yee.
Keely's Paris gold went one better than her silver in Tokyo, achieved while she was still a first-year criminology student. Keely retains a connection to the university, supported by Strength and Conditioning Coach Dane Mitchell through the Leeds Talent Hub.
Peter Slee, Vice Chancellor of Leeds Beckett University, said: "On behalf of everyone at Leeds Beckett, I'd like to congratulate Keely Hodgkinson.
"Keely's victory - and the manner she achieved it - has secured her place in Olympic and British sporting history.
"It has been a remarkable year on the global stage for our sporting alumni, with Dame Sarah Storey and Alex Yee also on the shortlist for Sports Personality of the Year.
"Everyone at Leeds Beckett is extremely proud to be associated with such wonderful athletes and role models."
Dame Sarah Storey won both the women's cycling Time Trial and Road Race in Paris, taking her Paralympic gold-medal haul to 19. Dame Sarah graduated from Leeds Beckett in 2000 with a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science.
Sport and Exercise graduate Alex Yee joined Keely in upgrading his silver from Tokyo to gold in the individual triathlon with one of the most dramatic late surges of this or any Olympics. Alex also won a triathlon team bronze, alongside fellow alumni Georgia-Taylor Brown.
