Leeds Beckett community members honoured in New Year list
Horticulturalist, broadcaster and author Alan Titchmarsh has been awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to horticulture and charity. Alan was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2003.
Former England captain Andrea Dobson, now development manager at Sheffield Eagles Foundation, receives an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to rugby league. Andrea graduated in Sport and Exercise Science in 2008.
Olympic gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson has also been awarded an MBE for services to athletics. The honour caps an incredible year for Keely, who claimed a stunning 800m gold in Paris, and was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year earlier this month. Keely was a first year criminology student when she exploded onto the international stage, and still receives some of her training through Leeds Beckett's Talent Hub.
Founder of 'Unity in Poverty Action' David Paterson becomes a medalist in the Order of the British Empire (BEM) for services to disadvantaged people in Leeds. David is a politics graduate from the class of 2003.
Professor Peter Slee, Vice Chancellor of Leeds Beckett University, said: "Congratulations to everyone in the Leeds Beckett University community who has been recognised for their achievements in the New Year Honours today.
"Our alumni are part of a community of more than 253,000 Leeds Beckett University graduates spanning 163 different countries and we are proud of all of their achievements.
"We're delighted to see our former students, alumni and honorary graduates honoured for their incredible efforts and impact."
They have joined last year's awards - former Leeds Rhinos and England Rugby League teammates Kevin Sinfield CBE and Rob Burrow CBE and former Team GB Olympian Tom Bosworth MBE.
