Carnegie School of Sport announces groundbreaking research link up with double Olympic sailor
Led by Professor Julian North, Director of the Centre for Sport Coaching at Leeds Beckett, alongside research Lesley McKenna OLY and with support from 11th Hour Racing and Think Beyond, the study will examine the transformative potential of belonging in high-performance teams. The findings, set for publication in late 2025, will also inform a series of peer-to-peer workshops designed to empower athletes, leaders and advocates with a deeper understanding of team culture and inclusivity.
Professor North highlighted Leeds Beckett University's expertise in this area: "The team has worked extensively with high-performance teams in the cultural and ethical understanding and development space, and we are delighted to be involved in this groundbreaking research partnership with Francesca Clapcich. She has some great ideas, along with fascinating and powerful stories to share."
The research team at Leeds Beckett will conduct in-depth, real-world analyses of high-performance teams, applying their findings across various sports and sectors. Their work builds on previous collaborations with US Soccer, US Tennis Association, the IOC, FIFA and the FA.
Francesca Clapcich is an Italian professional sailor who competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. In addition to World and European Championship titles, she was on the team that won round-the-world yacht race The Ocean Race in 2023. She commented: "As an athlete, I'm always focused on how to get more out of myself, my team and my equipment. For a long time, I have held the conviction that if you believe in yourself and feel you belong, you will be able to achieve more."
