Leeds Beckett film school graduates new short film set for BFI festival
Two Black Boys in Paradise
A pair of Leeds Beckett University (LBU) Northern Film School graduates are making a splash in the world of animation with their latest project. Two Black Boys in Paradise will be shown at the BFI Southbank National Film Theatre on Sunday 23 March, 2025.
The film, based on a poem by Dean Atta and narrated by actor and writer Jordan Stephens (of Rizzle Kicks), is a production of One6th Animation Studio, founded by Baz and Ben in 2018. It tells the story of teenagers Eden and Dula and their love for each other, tackling themes of racism, homophobia and identity.
Producer Ben graduated from LBU with a BA (Hons) in Film and Video Production in 2009 and was doubling up as a flight attendant as recently as 2022. Director Baz completed the same BA (Hons) in 2010, specialising in Screen Writing and Directing.
Baz said: "I'm profoundly grateful for the chance to visualise this beautiful and bold poem. The production has challenged us as an independent animation studio, but we've relished the opportunity made possible by the BFI, Dean and our dedicated associates. This film is a celebration of Black and queer identity. It speaks to the transformative power of personal victories for people who are held back - whether by systematic or internal forces - and the overwhelming joy that can be found in self-acceptance, personal empowerment and love."
Dr Sarah Bowen, Senior Lecturer and Head of Animation at Northern Film School, expressed her delight for the alumni: "This latest film demonstrates their inventive approach to storytelling and commitment to the craft. Baz and Ben's talent and hard work was evident as students and it is inspiring to see how these qualities have led to their success, setting a strong example for future creators."
After showing at the BFI Flare Festival, Two Black Boys in Paradise will travel to the American Documentary and Animation Film Festival in Palm Springs.
