Leeds Beckett Lecturer Unveils Immersive Audio-Visual Installation at Spurn Point Lighthouse

A unique multimedia installation that captures the elemental spirit of one of Britain's most dynamic coastal landscapes opens on Saturday 10 May 2025 at the historic Spurn Point Lighthouse.
It merges innovative soundscapes and responsive visual elements to transport visitors through the ever-changing natural rhythms that define this unique peninsula - where land, sea, wildlife and human presence intersect in constant evolution.
The installation features a sophisticated multi-channel audio experience built by Justin Morey - Senior Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University's Leeds School of Art - around three interconnected sonic layers. It engages with community voices such as visitors, conservationists and volunteers, while documenting seasonal transformations through field recordings. Finally, the lighthouse itself becomes an instrument, pulsing with the rhythm of the lighthouse's historic rotating lens.
Visual artist Ruthie Ford creates an equally immersive experience through innovative use of materials and space, one that shifts with changing light conditions and viewing perspectives. It all results in a kaleidoscopic visual experience that responds to both environmental conditions and visitor movement through the space.
A sandy peninsula that juts 3.5 miles out into the Humber Estuary, Spurn Point National Nature Reserve is an internationally important wildlife site for bird migration, and brims with insect life, flora and fauna, and marine visitors. It has a fascinating human history, having once housed garrisons during the Napoleonic wars, and is studded with derelict remains from World War I. Its award-winning lighthouse celebrates its 130th anniversary this year.
Justin Morey said: "With these works, we wanted to create something immersive and engaging which communicated the beauty, wonder and significance of Spurn - why the people who live and work here love it and strive to conserve it, and why we love it too."
Spurn: Rhythms & Reflections opens to the public on Saturday 10 May 2025 and will run until September.
