Celebrating Brain Health Through Art: Black Health Forum and Leeds Beckett University Launch Groundbreaking Community Project
The initiative aimed to improve knowledge around brain health, empower participants to take action across generations, and reduce stigma in talking about brain health and dementia. The workshops combined expert information with small group discussions and creative expression. Participants explored the links between lifestyle and brain health and produced powerful pieces of artwork reflecting their conversations and experiences, which will be displayed in an upcoming public exhibition.
Lorna James, Interim Chairperson of the Black Health Forum Bradford, led the project and said: "This initiative is about opening up conversations that often remain unspoken in our communities. Brain health matters to all of us - and through art and dialogue, we're breaking down barriers and building understanding."
Academic partners Dr Magda Jordao and Dr Stephanie Ejegi-Memeh from Leeds Beckett University brought research insights to the workshops and supported planning and evaluation.
Dr Jordao said: "There's a real gap in knowledge about dementia risk reduction. Projects like this are essential in making information accessible and meaningful, and empower minoritised communities to share ideas and take action."
The creative element was led by community artist and art tutor Marcia Brown, who said: "Art creates a safe and inclusive space for expression. It was powerful to witness how participants from different generations connected and shared through the creative process."
A participant of the workshop said: "This was such a meaningful, important event. Well done to the team. A brilliant example of community engagement, learning, and connection."
The project was funded by Alzheimer's Research UK's Inspire Fund, which supports innovative public engagement to increase understanding of dementia and brain health.
