King's Birthday Honours for Leeds Beckett University alumni
Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee has been appointed OBE. The double Olympic gold medal winner, who announced his retirement from the sport in late 2024, has been recognised for services to triathlon and to charity.
He has close link to Leeds Beckett having gained a master’s degree in finance and being awarded an honorary doctorate in Sports Science along with his brother Jonny. Both brothers are still regular faces on campus, accessing the world-class facilities and coaching.
Theresa Mason, chair of Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust, was awarded an OBE for Services to Education. Theresa attended Leeds Polytechnic to gain her BEd Hons in 1982 before launching a distinguished career supporting thousands of young people, teachers and leaders in education. Theresa also gained an Advanced Professional Diploma in Education from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2006.
Alumna Professor Mary Steen has been appointed OBE. Mary studied a degree in Healthcare Studies, a postgraduate certificate in Research Methodology and then a PhD in Nurse Midwife/Nursing Midwifery at Leeds Beckett.
Mary was born in Leeds and worked at Leeds Teaching Hospitals as a midwife. She is currently working in Australia as a Professor of research and midwifery in Perth. She was awarded her OBE for services to midwifery and maternal and familial health research.
Alumnus Jason Tutin has been awarded a BEM for services to digital inclusion. Jason studied a degree in Information and Library Services at Leeds Beckett and, after working for Leeds City Council’s library service for 20 years, is now part of the Integrated Digital Service.
