Enhancing Our Campus: Summer 2025 Works Summary
Over Summer 2025, a wide range of estates maintenance improvement projects were delivered across campus to enhance accessibility, safety, and the overall environment for staff and students. External redecoration took place at Bronte Hall, The Cottage, and North Lodge, alongside façade renovations at James Graham and refreshed interiors in Carnegie Hall, Churchwood, and Cavendish Hall. These works focused on timber repairs, protective coatings, flooring replacements, and internal redecoration to extend building lifespans and improve comfort. Infrastructure upgrades included new walkways at the Sports Arena and road and footpath improvements across Headingley Campus. Other improvements included upgrades to automatic doors, fire protection works across both campuses, and fire door repairs at Leighton Hall. Rooftop bird netting was replaced on key City Campus buildings, and several teaching and office spaces saw reconfigurations, new furniture, and improved lighting.
The Engineering Department has delivered a programme of works to improve compliance, reliability, and critical infrastructure across the estate. Notable projects included replacing emergency lighting at the Rose Bowl (part of a larger planned investment in modernising campus lighting), installing fire suppression systems in the Woodhouse SU Kitchen and Data Centre, and upgrading systems at James Graham with a new boiler flue dilution and fire alarm replacement. Additional works covered fire damper renewals and air conditioning replacements, while CCTV replacement and new help points were also delivered at Carnegie Village on behalf of UPP. In total, around £600k has been invested, strengthening statutory compliance, reducing risk, and ensuring the long term resilience of the University’s building services.
Further improvements included signage and branding updates at the Sports Centre and a full refurbishment of the Leslie Silver Building staircase, with upgraded lighting and a new ground floor lobby glazing system. Flooring was replaced in Fairfax Hall, Carnegie Annex, and the Sports Centre while the Portland SU office was reconfigured to better support student activities. Lab space expansions on Portland Level 7 and Calverley Level 4 are scheduled for late September through early October. Notably, Fairfax Hall is being transformed into a Sport Health Tech Incubator Hub, with refurbishment continuing into early 2026. Additional accessibility upgrades are underway, including sliding doors at Broadcasting Place A and automated access to three lecture theatres in the Rose Bowl, reflecting our ongoing commitment to a safe, modern, and inclusive campus.
