Leeds Beckett American Football coaches to cycle 400 miles for CALM charity
Head Coach Dale Bottomley will join forces with his assistant coaches: David Rowlands, Chris Jones, Andy Fraser and Jason Shaw to take on their mammoth challenge.
The group start their charity ride on Friday 6 July and will travel via Derby, Nottingham and Durham before finishing their journey in Stirling on Monday 9 July. All four locations host teams which Carnegie American Football will compete against in the 2018-19 BUCS Premier Northern Division.
The team’s aim is to raise money and awareness for CALM - having already raised £500 so far.
CALM is an award-winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK - in 2015, 75% of all UK suicides were male.
Addressing mental health issues affecting young men is something that is close to all the coaches’ hearts at Carnegie American Football.
Assistant coach Jason Shaw said: “We are ‘very’ amateur cyclists - I didn’t own a bike until two weeks ago - but we have been training hard in preparation.
“We understand it will be extremely tough but knowing it’s for a great cause will help push us each day.”
