Fungus-damaged trees to be removed from Headingley campus
The pictures show the trees in question. One sits on the south-east corner of the Acre, and the other on the path which cuts the corner on the road which runs from the St Chad’s entrance to the road running alongside the tennis courts.
The third image shows the fungus when it was fruiting in October. The thinning canopy and dying branches are visible, and if left unchecked will lead to falling branches on places of high footfall. As all our trees are protected, we sought advice from an external tree consultant, who confirmed the presence of the fungus and recommended removal of the trees. The council’s tree officer has visited the site and granted planning permission to remove the trees down to the base.
This needs to be carried out soon at a time when the campus is least busy, so we have scheduled the work this Saturday 15 November. As the trees are located in areas close to footpaths and roads on campus, there will be some closures and diversions but campus will remain open to all.
We take our role as custodians of this wonderful campus extremely seriously, and would only ever remove a tree as an absolute last resort. We will plant new trees to compensate for the loss, and continue to work to increase biodiversity and sustainability on these beautiful grounds, including:
- Reusing chippings and clippings as mulch
- Creating new wildlife habitats
- Running an allotment in our learning resources centre
Thank you for your cooperation with any disruption this Saturday.
