Minoritised ethnic groups and modifiable dementia risk

A scoping review of UK-based evidence.

Minoritised ethnic groups and modifiable dementia risk

Participants

This systematic scoping review screened 7,748 records, assessed 122 full text records and included 14 studies which analysed one or more of the 12 modifiable risk factors among minoritised ethnic groups in the UK.

Aims

The aim was to map:

  1. which minoritised ethnic groups have been included in UK research on dementia modifiable risk factors
  2. for which modifiable risk factors
  3. using which research methods

Key findings

There was a lack of research with well specified ethnic groups, and for some of the modifiable risk factors which have the greatest impact (e.g., social isolation). The impact of discrimination and the interaction between risk factors was identified as key by patient and public involvement members but research on this was scarce. Further research in these areas is recommended to support personalised risk reduction with people from minoritised ethnic communities.
