Who is responsible for research governance at the university?

The Academic Board is the parent committee for academic activities and is responsible for overseeing and regulating general issues relating to research, scholarship, teaching and courses at our university.

The Research and Enterprise Committee is responsible to the Academic Board for overseeing our university’s research; enterprise; other scholarly activity and the provision of research degrees.

The University Research Ethics Committee (UREC) is responsible to the Research and Enterprise Committee for overseeing the development and implementation of our university’s policy and procedures relating to research ethics.

The Research Degrees Sub-Committee remit includes:

  • Oversight and monitoring of adherence to, and application of, our university academic regulations and the procedures set out in the research student handbook (and other associated handbooks)
  • Oversight and monitoring of arrangements for the registration and supervision of candidates on research degrees
  • Consideration and approval of examination arrangements for all research degrees, including the appointment of external examiners and independent Chairs
  • Ensuring that examinations are conducted, and awards recommended, in accordance with the regulations

Our university's academic regulations provide the framework for academic integrity and research awards for research and enterprise. 

The Audit Committee has delegated responsibilities from the Board of Governors to oversee any research misconduct investigations and their reporting on behalf of the university.
