To qualify for the Carnegie Sports Scholarship, applicants must not only showcase exceptional sporting achievements but also embody the core values of Leeds Beckett University. Recipients are expected to represent the university in British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) events, contributing to the vibrant and competitive sporting community we foster.
Successful undergraduate recipients will receive a £6,000 annual scholarship. Postgraduate recipients will receive a 50% discount on postgraduate taught fees.
Please select your sport below to view the minimum playing level criteria before you apply:
Must meet one of the following criteria:
- Non- GB adult programme member.
- Extensive experience and high performance levels in European leagues.
- Extensive experience and high performance levels in North American leagues/divisions.
Must meet one or more of the following criteria:
Men
- Be a regular contributor to a 1st team squad in Step 4 or above of the FA's National League pyramid OR equivalent home nation league experience.
- Have been part of a football academy at a club within Step 2 or above of the FA's National League pyramid and received an academy scholarship until U18.
- Senior or age group international.
Women
- Be a regular contributor to a 1st team squad in Tier 4 of the FA's Women's Football pyramid or above OR equivalent home nation league experience.
- Have been part of a football academy at a club within FA Women’s Super League/ FA Women’s Championship level and received an academy scholarship until to U18.
- Senior or age group international.
Must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Will be assessed based on European U20 and U23 championship standards.
- Must have competed at a national or international level.
- All athlete personal best information must come from an official national governing body.
Must have previous experience playing at or above a National U17's or U19's level.
Must meet one of the following criteria:
- Home Nation Senior / Age Group International. Super League squad player.
- NPL playing with 80% court time in the last 3 years.
Must meet one of the following criteria:
- Championship or Championship 1 playing experience
- Super League Reserves
- Queensland/Bartercard Cup
- Elite 1 in France
- Four Nations international/Great Britain playing experience
Must meet one of the following criteria:
- Previous regular playing experience, or competition experience to be assessed by coaching team.
- Professional club academy experience.
Must meet at least one or more of the below criteria:
- Has or has had an ATP/WTA ranking point(s) or shows regular competition at futures level , points must have been earned by winning and not a wild card granted entry to main draw
- Has been ranked Top 500 Junior ITF.
- Has been nationally ranked inside the Top 20 as a junior within a select number larger Tennis Federation countries.
- Was at an NCAA Div 1/D2 University playing in the team regularly with a UTR of 11.8 or better . 10 or better for females.
- Shows a history of developing as a player towards ITF futures /challenger level.
Terms & Conditions
To be eligible for the scholarship discount you must:
- Be assessed as having an 'Overseas or EU' residency status
- Be assessed to pay the overseas fee
- Be studying the relevant course full time
- Be actively enrolled on an eligible course
- Be a self-funded student, who is paying the full course fee for that year (those students who have their tuition fees paid by a third-party sponsor, employer or government agency will not be eligible)
- Studying that level of the course for the first time (i.e. not repeating any level during that year)
In addition, you must meet the playing level required for your sport, as outlined above.
Please note: students who receive the Carnegie Sport scholarship will not be eligible to receive the International Student Scholarship worth between £1,000 - £5,000. The higher-value scholarship takes precedence over the lower-value scholarship.

Applications will be assessed initially by the relevant Leeds Beckett University sports coach. Applicants who meet the playing level for their sport will be further assessed by the Leeds Beckett international recruitment team.
You will not be eligible for the scholarship if any of the following apply to you;
- Courses or schemes where particular rates or payment arrangements exist (such as those relating to Franchise / Overseas / Partner Based delivery or any other special arrangement)
- Part time students
- Any repeat year
- Any year where the student is out on placement
- Students on Distance Learning courses
- Those studying PGDip or PGCert programmes
- Those studying LLM Legal Practice course
- Those studying Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA), Doctor of Education (EdD), or Research By Published Works.
If you are in receipt of the Carnegie Sports International Scholarship, you will not be eligible to receive an additional international scholarship from the university. Where you qualify for more than one international scholarship, the scholarship with the highest value will be awarded. The university reserves the right to vary or withdraw any scholarship at its sole discretion.
