My introduction to the construction industry was through a very practical path. After sixth form I completed an apprenticeship in on-site joinery with PYC Construction. Through the company I constructed and erected new build timber frames and worked on a number of different renovations, many of which were built to Passivhaus standards. I then went on to set up my own carpentry business and have since built using similar principles.

Whilst liaising with different Architectural Technologists, Architects and Engineers to produce different builds I became increasingly interested in the design stage. Acknowledging this, I decided to return to education and pursue a career in Architectural Technology. I have now completed my first year at Leeds Beckett University and ongoing with level 5.

I enjoy expressing my creative side through exploring different concepts. When designing, my goal is to employ passive gain strategies whilst creating an outcome that is aesthetically pleasing for all within proximity of the building, when doing this I find that my A-level in Art and Design Technology has helped me to present my ideas.

Technically I always strive to achieve high-performance, constantly questioning where cold bridging can be reduced or removed, and how airtightness can be improved. I take inspiration from previously successful technical drawings and use my practical knowledge to ensure the design can be built with ease.

I believe my experience in the industry has awarded me with an ability to work comfortably in a team. This has helped in many areas, for example, learning other’s techniques and sharing information to grasp a better understanding of certain software to efficiently design Building Information Models (BIM).

The form and function of buildings is something that interests me wherever I go, how a multitude of factors can change the feeling of a space. I believe this passion that follows me will allow me to be an asset to future employers and fuel my expansion within the industry.

After completing my course, I want to go into industry. I hope that my designs and details can push the standards within the construction industry in the right direction. Personally, I think that the residential sector is lacking high-functioning buildings, and certainly those at an affordable price. My ambition is to introduce them as a possibility and help others understand the importance of design.
