Billy Bremner (1942 - 1997)
Footballer and captain of Leeds United
Biography
Billy Bremner was the Scottish captain of Leeds United during ‘the most successful period in the club's history’ (Anon., 2019). He held himself and his team to his motto ‘side before self every time’ throughout his time at Leeds United.
Context
The statue was commissioned in 1997 in Bremner’s memory days after he died from a heart attack at 54 years of age. It was unveiled by his family two years later (Stride, et al., 2013). The statue commemorates the massive impact Bremer had on club. Bremner is regarded as the club’s most successful captain, having led Leeds united to two First Division titles, as well as the FA Cup, League Cup and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (Hardscape, 2018). The praise surrounding the iconic figure has continued over the years with fans dressing the statue in club merchandise in his honour. In 2017 it was announced that the statue’s setting was going to be redeveloped as ‘Bremner Square’. Ten stones were added around the base for the Bremner XI legends as well as 6,000 personalised stones for fans (Hardscape, 2018). The unveiling of the revamped statue was met with praise from fans with many of them in attendance on the opening day.
