Biographies

Born: South Africa, 13th March 1940.

Died: 28th Sept, 1995, Leeds.

He was a South African football player, who became a winger for Leeds United football club. Johanneson made nearly 200 appearances for the club between 1961 to 1970.

Born: Leeds, 2nd Dec 1995.

In 2014 he signed on to play midfielder for Leeds United. Before that he played for the under 23 team for Leeds. In 2020 he became a member of the England national football team, under management of Gareth Southgate.

Born: 12th April 1969, South Africa.

Former South African centre back, before transferring to Leeds. He joined Leeds United in 1994, and retired in 2005. Radebe was captain of both Leeds United and the national South Africa teams.

Context

Painted to celebrate the new partnership between the football club and Roc Nation, an entertainment agency owned by rapper Jay-Z. Entitled Paving the Way, it was commissioned by Leeds United Football Club.

Description:
Painted on the side of a house, this 12 - metre high mural, displays Leeds United legends Albert Johanneson and Lucas Radebe, with midfielder Kalvin Phillips centre of the mural. It also includes the skyline of New York City, to pay homage to Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s label, and new partners with Leeds United.
