Rob Burrow (1982 - )

Rugby League player.

Biography

  • 2001: professional Rugby League debut
  • 2004: Joined the England team for the European Nations Championships
  • 2007: Burrow was made Leeds Rhinos’ Player of the Year. He also won the Harry Sunderland Award for Man of the Match in the Super League Grand Final in the same year, and was runner up in the BBC’s Yorkshire Sports Personality of the Year awards.
  • 2011: He won his second Harry Sunderland award after his performance in the Super League Grand Final.
  • 2019: marked his final year at the club.
  • Dec 2019: Diagnosed with motor neurone disease, aged 37.
  • March 2021: awarded honorary doctorate in Sport Science by Leeds Beckett University.

Context

After his diagnosis of MND became public, individuals commended him, his charity work and his inspirational spirit.

Since his diagnosis, Rob Burrow announced he is working with Leeds Hospital Charity, to help raise funds for a state-of-the- art facility to help people suffering from MND. This new care centre will officially be named ‘The Rob Burrow Centre’, in recognition for his fundraising efforts.
