James' research focuses on sports injury epidemiology, with a specific interest in the prevention of head injuries and concussion in rugby union. He has 70 peer-reviewed publications and received approximately £124k in research funding. He has received funding for research projects from World Rugby, South African Rugby Union and the Medical Research Council. He was also asked by World Rugby to write guidelines for injury surveillance at the amateur level in rugby union. He currently oversees quality control of World Rugby's Head Injury Assessment (HIA) database.

James completed his PhD in 2014, jointly through the University of Cape Town and Vrije University Medical Center in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His PhD thesis evaluated the effectiveness of the South African Rugby Union's nationwide injury prevention programme (BokSmart). He also completed a Masters in Health Economics at the University of Cape Town while doing his postdoctoral fellowships.
