Chapter

Children on the Street

Featured 22 August 2024 Public Health in Sub-Saharan Africa Routledge

This chapter focuses on the context of Benin City, Nigeria, where issues of the role of poverty in child labour and the interrelationship of children’s labour and children’s education remain a significant area for discussion in the context of sociocultural change and progressive development. The chapter takes into account elements of child labour that may potentially be ‘unconditional’ in terms of their management and be of detriment to educational processes. It specifically focuses on hazardous forms of child labour and those children who are on the streets of Benin, with particular emphasis being placed on the characteristics and division of children who are not on the street. The chapter highlights the hazardous nature of child street work, which is the most predominant form of child work in Nigeria.
