Research interests

Project Something is a collaboration between Benjamin Hall and Jonathan Briggs with the purpose of exploring chance and place in a digital landscape. Our methods include, mixing the physical with the digital, the people with the place and the found with the curated.

We embrace chance and encourage the unexpected. We are both currently active researchers, lecturers and practicing professionals within the creative industries. The research is an outlet for our nostalgic intrigue and a chance to continuously assess the changing digital landscape.

We aim to exhibit our finding and experiments on an annual basis. The latest outcomes from our project will be exhibited in early 2016 in Leeds.

Football: Research Active Communities

Featured 2016

[Background] Through his design practice, Jonathan Briggs develops design-led strategies alongside a cluster of clients who all have a shared voice of community-based action against discrimination within football. The focus of his work is around FARE (Football against Racism in Europe, FURD (Football Unites Racism Divides) and SCoRe (A sports Community Research Project). Briggs looks to balance the needs of academic research and on-the-ground active networks. [Research Question ] Can we use design and communication to elevate the status of active networks and research groups to enhance their profile and therefore increase their effectiveness, supporting vulnerable groups around the world?  [Methodology, Context and Dissemination] The methodology involved creating and employing  focused campaigns around international sporting events for FARE. This included joining together an online presence for vulnerable outsiders at the World Cup in Russia by means of a website (Diversity Guide) that used WhatsApp as a secure and safe communication tool for fans visiting Russia. This connected with Diversity House, an on-the-ground exhibition and place of sanctuary for vulnerable fans to watch the games and engage in debates around minority groups supporting football. This coherent approach allowed FARE to have a professional presence when the spotlight was shined upon them. [Significance and impact] During the 2018 World Cup in Russia, I designed and Art Directed and created 2 Diversity House exhibitions hosted in Moscow and St. Petersburg, both of which were supported by an online diversity guide. The impact reached its peak when the Diversity House in St Petersburg was closed by the Russian Authorities. This created a huge spike in activity and FARE were thrust into the global limelight during the duration of the World Cup. On the day of the article, it featured as one of the top 3 most-read stories on the BBC News website. With the success of Russia behind us, FARE have recently (May 2019) delivered ‘Lefoot’ Diversity House in Paris as part of The Women's World Cup 2019 which has been delivered by me and my team.

The Gyre

Featured 27 January 2023

The Gyre is an interactive installation that sets out to raise awareness for our collective, digital consumption and the global, carbon impact that this can have. The project forms part of a long-standing collaboration between Briggs and Hall who have together developed methods for creating immersive digital collage which employ waste fragments from online platforms using code. The Gyre takes the form of a projected installation and a web app that allows users to contribute their own online activity in the form of a personalised visualisation. In addition to the climate change focus, the project explored the use of emerging XR technologies for the purposes of digital storytelling. The SME partner for this project was Field who were able to fulfil the funding call and meet the criteria for the project delivery. The Gyre secured £25,000 funding from XR Stories Climate Challenge and was exhibited as part of Green Screens: Environmental Sustainability and XR Storytelling event at York's Guildhall in January 2023. The project was also selected for inclusion at South by South West (SXSW) in Austin, USA by the Immersive Futures Lab, who represented the UK’s emerging talent in digital storytelling. Sue Edmunds of XR Stories wrote: “The Immersive Futures Lab welcomed more than 500 people and the XR Stories demos were a major attraction, sparking intrigue and conversations with visitors from many different institutions and industries.” (Edmunds, 2023, para.4) The Gyre has featured prominently in marketing from XR Stories and their associated partners across social media and communications.
