Getting around Leeds

When it comes to transport and getting around the city, Leeds really is very easy - with great links to other major cities as well as the rest of Yorkshire.

Based in the heart of the UK, Leeds has great transport links, a thriving economy, a vibrant social scene and is one of the greenest cities in Europe. It's the perfect place to study, work and explore.

Getting around the city

  1. Walking

Leeds is easy to navigate on foot, and the city's strong public transport network means that you don't need your own car to get around.

City Campus buildings are between two and 14 minutes' walk from Leeds station, and from Headingley train station, you could walk to Headingley Campus in 15 minutes, Carnegie Pavilion in 12 minutes and Headingley Stand in eight minutes.

Walking is always a great choice - not only is it better for the environment, but it means you can get your steps in and discover new areas of Leeds.

  2. Bus

Leeds has fantastic bus routes not only around the city, but further beyond too, typically running from around 5am to 11pm. First Bus has a very useful app which makes getting around simple, and with a student ticket costing just £1.80, it's an efficient and cost-effective option.

It's also just a short, free shuttle bus ride between our two campuses, and you can download the bus timetables below.

  3. Train

As well as Leeds city centre train station (which is just a short walk from City Campus), we also have Burley Park and Headingley which service the student areas. Trains typically run every 30 minutes to the city centre, with more during rush hour.

It's a good idea to look into getting a railcard which can save you a 1/3 on train fares.

  4. Bike

Cycling is the perfect way to get around Leeds - the city has many keen cyclists. You can hire a bike for just £50 for three months or £80 per year (plus £50 returnable deposit). We have great facilities at both campuses for cyclists, including our BikeFix (Headingley) and Bike Hub (City) workshops, where you can get help and advice with bike maintenance, secure cycle parking, showers and lockers.

  5. Taxi

Sometimes certain journeys call for a taxi, and luckily Leeds Beckett Student's Union have partnered with Veezu to offer a Safe Rides Scheme.

This is a service that provides emergency transport for students who find themselves unable to pay and in need of a lift home.

Getting to Leeds

  1. By air

Leeds Bradford Airport can be reached easily by the A1 Flyer bus or taxi, providing you with direct access to more than 80 destinations, including 12 capital cities, including Paris, Warsaw, Prague and Berlin.

  2. By train

Leeds has excellent links to other UK cities via train - you can get to Manchester in 45 minutes and London in just 2.5 hours.

Be sure to check out student discounts or seasonal passes so you can save money on fares.

  3. By car

You don't need a car to access our campuses or get around Leeds, and parking on campus is extremely limited for students, unless you are a Blue Badge holder. While we're well linked by motorways in Leeds (M1, M62 AND M621), we recommend public transport, cycling or walking.
