Picking the right course and university is hugely important. Where that university is, should also be something you spend time thinking about.
Let’s say you’re looking for a lively social experience – a great nightlife, music venues, bars and a large variety of food outlets. A university in a small town or in the countryside probably isn’t for you.
Thankfully for our university, we’re based in Leeds – a popular student city with everything on your doorstep. Leeds provides a good balance between big city living and the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. Here’s a few questions to ask yourself when you are weighing up which university location is right for you:
It’s natural that you will want to feel welcome and you should try to visit your university location before applying if you can. Make sure you get the right vibe about where you’ll be living.
Leeds is a popular destination for UCAS applicants – there are more than 60,000 students in the city and that’s why you’ll find that so many shopping, nightlife and dining promotions are tailored (and usually discounted) for you.
Here at Leeds Beckett we have many students who choose to stay at home during their studies. It’s a great option to help reduce costs and, alongside meeting people through your course, our societies, Students’ Union events or our sports teams, you will feel very much part of the student community.
However you plan to travel, both our Headingley and City campuses are well connected when it comes to transport, and are easy to get to.
Lots of students see university as a great opportunity to develop their independence, move out and live in halls. That said, you might want to go back home during holidays or for a family birthday, so transport links are worth looking at. Fortunately for our students, Leeds is well connected with the rest of the country thanks to great rail, road and air travel links. And, if you get a student rail card, you’ll also get a discount on tickets.
Going to university is a chance to embrace what you love, not leave it behind. Do your research on the universities you are interested in, and the areas they are based in, to make sure you can continue with your interests.
At Leeds Beckett we have many sports teams and societies to get involved in, while the city itself is packed with opportunities, whether you have a love for music, film, food, culture or theatre, to name a few. While university tuition fees often grab the headlines, it’s important to get an idea of living costs and look ahead as to whether your choice of location is the right option for you financially.
Leeds is regarded as one of the most affordable student cities and a weekly spend that would include accommodation, food, travel, course costs, entertainment, clothes, and your mobile phone is expected to come in at around £196-£290.
If you’re looking for a good night out as part of your university experience, make sure the location you’re looking at can provide you with exactly that.
Leeds is well-known for being one of the UK’s best cities for nightlife, and the sheer number of nightclubs and bars means that there is something for everyone.
Sure, Leeds has a reputation as being a social hotspot, but there are plenty of opportunities to unwind and enjoy some quieter attractions. There’s a range of free parks, museums and galleries dotted around the city, and you’re also within touching distance of some of the country’s most breathtaking countryside.
Whichever location you are considering, make sure it provides the experience you are looking for.
