Starting your studies in 2027?

Student funding is changing for new undergraduates starting from January 2027. If you plan to start university in 2027 (including taking a gap year or deferring your offer) these changes will apply to you.

What's changing

From January 2027, Student Finance England will replace the current student loan system with the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) for new students.

This includes you if:

  • You apply to start your studies in 2027
  • You defer your university place to 2027
  • You take a gap year and start your studies in 2027

If you started university before January 2027 and continue your course, you’ll stay on the current funding system.

Key things to know

  1. Funding will match what you study

Your tuition fee loan and maintenance loan (for living costs) will be based on how many modules you study.

  2. Most full-time students won't see big changes

If you're studying a full-time honours degree and haven't studied at university before, LLE should feel similar to the current system.

If you've studied before, this could affect how much funding you can get.

  3. Changing or repeating a course may affect funding

Under LLE, the rules for changing course, repeating a year, or studying part-time may be different.

If you withdraw from your course rather than transfer, you may be moved onto the new LLE system.

The government will confirm more details soon.

  4. Sharia-compliant finance

LLE aims to introduce a Sharia-compliant student finance option for Muslim students. More details about Alternative (non-interest-bearing) Student Finance will be published on the UK Government website.

  5. Postgraduate Study

LLE does not change standard postgraduate Master's loans from Student Finance England. However, LLE will apply to some postgraduate courses that currently use undergraduate funding, such as:

    • PGCE courses
    • Allied health courses
    • Integrated Master's degrees

If you're unsure which funding applies to your course, contact us for advice.

  6. Students from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland

LLE only applies to students funded by Student Finance England. Funding bodies in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have not announced similar changes.

  7. Stay Updated

Some details are still being confirmed. If you’re starting in 2027 or later, make sure you regularly check the UK Government website for updates.
