Tina at graduation

Tina Yancheva is a class of 2022 Leeds School of Arts graduate. Here, she shares her experiences of studying her course at Leeds Beckett.

Why did you choose to study at Leeds Beckett?

I didn’t attend an open day because I’m from Bulgaria so I just looked online and found the information there, which gave me a feel of what it was going to be like. I looked at my course online and looked at what I’d be studying.

I think the thing really made me choose Leeds Beckett was the city of Leeds. I felt drawn to this kind of lifestyle, it’s a big city but not too big which is great. Now that I’ve finished my studies, I feel that Leeds is a great city to get started in, there’s always something happening and there are a lot of companies that you can look up to and work for – both during uni and afterwards.

What support did you receive whilst at university?

The support I received at Leeds Beckett was incredible! All the tutors were really passionate about us doing our best, and teaching us as best as they could. Not only that but the course was also about being a good person, a good colleague and learning to work in a team. Any time we had any problems, whether they related to our studies or not, the course team was there.

Were there any challenges that you overcame during university?

I feel like the biggest challenge that I’ve overcome is probably being comfortable enough to speak English, which was something that I felt very frightening at the beginning of living here. Also, letting go of stigmas within me because I come from another country where it’s a bit more conservative.

I was really encouraged to use my background in my work on my course, which helped to shape me into the artist that I am now.

What was your favourite part of studying performing arts?

My favourite and most joyous moment was probably when we did Lift-Off Festival in our third year. We had to make our own solo or group performances, for mine I collaborated with a classmate called Angel. Our performance was based on feminism and exploring each other’s cultures because she’s from Egypt and I’m from Bulgaria.

The festival was so much fun, not only creating a performance from scratch but also looking at what my classmates made, it was just an incredible two days of watching performances back-to-back and it’s one of my favourite memories.
