The Leeds Beckett Athletics club has seen some of the UK’s top athletes pass through its ranks from gold medal winning Team GB paralympian Kadeena Cox to double gold medal winning Team GB Triathlete Alistair Brownlee. Led by Head Coach Andrew Henderson the athletics team pride themselves on being a close-knit group ensuring everyone feels welcome whilst performing at the top of their game. The main focus of the athletics season is three major annual BUCS events including:

  • Cross Country
  • Indoor Track and Field Championships
  • Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Everything you need to know

Train to win

The athletics team is based up at our Headingley campus alongside our eight lane running track, field space and all the equipment you could need to pursue your track and field career. The team trains five times a week during the evenings and weekends to work around your studies. You’ll have sessions with the whole club and ones specifically focused on your discipline, alongside strength and conditioning / recovery sessions.

Silver club mark

The Athletics team was awarded the Silver LBU Club Mark for 25/26

We have been supporting students to reach their potential through the scheme since 2002. Famous alumni that have benefitted from the scheme include Lucy Bronze, Alistair Brownlee, Alex Yee, Emily Scarratt, Vicky Fleetwood, Laura Weightman and Tom Bosworth.

Leeds Beckett awards a number of sports scholarships to high performing athletes each year who are committed to upholding the values of the university and willing to represent Leeds Beckett in BUCS events. Scholarships are also awarded to those who demonstrate the ability to progress and achieve high levels of success in their chosen sports.

Criteria

As an athletics team member you may be eligible for a scholarship if you meet the following criteria:

  • Age group Internationals (achieving qualification standards for major age group championships)

How to get involved

If you’re a committed, passionate and motivated sports person then track and field is the perfect sport for you to showcase those great characteristics. Whether you’re looking to compete at the highest level or just fancy taking up a new sport, the club will be a great fit with so many events available such as running, jumping and throwing.
