Leeds Beckett Hockey Club is one of the largest clubs at the university with three Men’s, four Ladies’ and a mixed team all competing in regular competitive fixtures. We accommodate players of all standards from complete beginners looking for recreational hockey to international players wanting performance level hockey. Away from the pitch we have a vibrant social presence with weekly socials, as well as showing a keen interest in charity work.

Train to win
The Leeds Beckett Hockey team provides players with the best training programmes available. That’s why here at Leeds Beckett our players have access to performance coaching, strength and conditioning sessions, analysis and physiotherapy.
Men’s and ladies’ 1st XI’s players can expect to train around two times a week. Sessions will be a combination of pitch sessions, strength and conditioning and analysis sessions. The remainder of the club train one to two times a week. All teams compete in BUCS fixtures on a Wednesday with social events taking place weekly post-match.
All programmes are designed to fit around your studies so you can get a great education while playing hockey at your preferred level!
What equipment will I need?
All players will need to provide their own:
- Hockey stick
- Shin pads
- Gum shield
The hockey team has been awarded the Gold LBU Club Mark for 2025/26
We have been supporting students to reach their potential through the scheme since 2002. Famous alumni that have benefitted from the scheme include Lucy Bronze, Alistair Brownlee, Alex Yee, Emily Scarratt, Vicky Fleetwood, Laura Weightman and Tom Bosworth.
Leeds Beckett awards a number of sports scholarships to high performing athletes each year who are committed to upholding the values of the university and willing to represent Leeds Beckett in BUCS events. Scholarships are also awarded to those who demonstrate the ability to progress and achieve high levels of success in their chosen sports.
Criteria
As a hockey player you may be eligible for a scholarship if you meet the following criteria:
- Play in Investec Premier Division (W) or English Premier Division (M)
- GB International
- Home Nation International
- U18 or above International honours
