Students from the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing were given the opportunity to chat to employers working in the industry at a Careers Fair on 18 October.

The event, which took place in the Rose Bowl building, featured employers from industries such as engineering, construction, surveying and planning. Hundreds of students attended throughout the afternoon and were able to make networks and find out more about potential career paths.

National housebuilding company Keepmoat Homes were the business sponsor of the event. Siobhan Cooper, Social Media Value Coordinator at Keepmoat, said “We’re here today to try and make students aware of what we offer in terms of traineeships and apprenticeships.

“We benefit by being able to meet first hand some of the students who are interested in roles we offer. It gives us the opportunity to talk to them and they can also see if it’s what they want to do.”

The students attending the Careers Fair were from a range of different year groups and courses across the School. Final year Real Estate and Property Management student Cristian said “My future career aspirations are to work for a large property company. At this Careers Fair, I’ve been able to interact with several property companies and get to know what they offer graduates.

“It allows me to really understand what the working environment is like and put forward the skills that I’ve learnt and what I can offer them as a young graduate.”

Javaria is a second year Quantity Surveying student who also benefitted from the fair: “Attending the Careers Fair has allowed me to network with a range of employers. I’ve gained a huge knowledge of the industry which will hopefully open opportunities for my placement year.”

Rebecca Caunce, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Galliford Try Construction, said “We always have a really good level of interest from students at these events. It’s so timely for them – they’re looking for opportunities so it’s just about getting us linked up and getting the right people into the roles that we need to fill.”

The School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing’s industry links present ongoing opportunities to help students gain hands on experience, undertake work placements and find employment after their studies. Reader Sam Zulu said “As the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing, we hope to continue supporting our students so that once they graduate they get into employment.

“That’s the reason for hosting today’s event. It’s been a great networking opportunity for students to have a discussion with potential employers in an informal setting.”
