The School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing welcomed numerous employers from the tech and digital sectors at a careers event on 20 October.

The Future Jobs Expo took place across two sites at Headingley Campus. Employers included national television network Channel 4, online sports streaming platform DAZN, software developers HyperFinity and delivery company Evri.

The event, organised jointly by the Leeds Beckett careers team and the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing, allowed students to find out more about graduate opportunities and make valuable career networks.

The Ethical Hacking Society also helped plan the event. The society, which regularly hosts talks from people within the information security industry, had a stall at the Expo and were telling students how their learnings at university can be applied in the real world.

President of the society, Corbin Richardson, said “The digital industry is absolutely booming but sometimes it can be quite difficult to get into. So we’re hoping that today we can give people as many opportunities as possible and help them gain a better understanding of how the industry works.”

The majority of organisations at the event were based in Leeds. This included Channel 4, who established a national headquarters in the city in 2021. Jade Finlay works within the 4Skills team, who provide a range of entry level talent schemes. She said “We have a lot of digital careers opportunities in Leeds, so it’s great to be able to talk to students about what they’re looking for and see if we’ve got any gaps they could fill. We’ve had some really positive conversations.”

In addition to current students, there were also a number of recent graduates who benefitted from the event. Sreesanth graduated from the MSc Information and Technology course earlier this year: “These events are really important because the job market feels quite tough at the moment."

“Here, employers are pointing us to where we need to go, what we need to do and what our future career growth could be. It’s been really, really helpful.”

Jim Gradwell, Head of Machine Learning and Data Engineering at HyperFinity, said “This is a great way for us to recruit young talent. It’s also really nice as a Leeds-based company to build ties with the university. I came to a Data Science showcase event a few months ago too which was excellent and we’re hoping to take part in more events in the future.”
